How to Prepare Your Perennials for Winter, Quaker City, Ohio

The cold, winter weather can do a number on your garden unless you take the proper steps to keep it maintained; this is especially true with sensitive perennials. Sunnyside Greenhouse in Quaker City, OH, wants your garden to stay in great shape all year round, so they’ve compiled some helpful tips for you to keep your perennials protected during the coming season.

4 Steps to Protect Your Perennials

1. Gather the Proper Tools

Having the right tools on hand will help ensure your bulbs remain in the best condition possible. To prepare your perennials for winter, you’ll need a set of pruning shears, a shovel or trowel, and your preferred mulch or row cover.

2. Wait for the First Frost

perennialsOnce you’ve had the first frost in your area and your perennials begin to wilt and die, it’s time to pull out that shovel and dig up the ones that won’t be able to make it through the winter, like gladiolas, dahlias, and any other sensitive bulbs. Before storing them, trim away all the foliage, so it doesn’t rot or retain moisture throughout the winter.

3. Trim & Water Perennials That Will Stay in the Ground

If you’re located in an area that receives little rain, snow, or extreme weather during the winter, it’s not necessary to dig up your perennials and store them away until the next growing season. Cut the stems of your perennials back to six inches from the ground and water them once a month, so they remain healthy.

4. Protect Them With Mulch or Other Yard Debris

Once you’ve trimmed away the wilting foliage and ensure that your perennials are properly buried, add a layer of mulch or yard waste around the bed. Doing so helps to protect their roots and provide them with the nutrients they’ll need to make it through winter.
