If you’re a painter, you know that many jobs appear simpler than they actually are. Kids’ rooms, in particular, can pose a challenge for any painting contractor, especially if little ones want a rainbow of colors beaming through the windows. While all-in-one paint and primer is designed to make house painting simpler, that isn’t always the case. Below, experts offer the benefits and drawbacks of this popular new product.

The Benefits

Works Well for Basic Jobs

painting contractorSince painting should always be followed by primer, you’re probably used to coating walls with multiple layers in one day. All-in-one paint and primer was designed to save time, allowing the painter to accomplish both in one stroke. Unfortunately, this isn’t the reality. Primer was created to prep surfaces for a top coat, so the all-in-one-product can work, but walls must have been painted before. If they’re fresh, unpainted walls, priming them for the task is still an essential duty. If they’ve already been painted, however, the product should work. Color is the major factor here.

Easy on Similar Colors

If a coat of primer already exists on the walls, this all-in-one product can make house painting easier, at least for basic jobs. The color change should be basic (if you’re going from black to white, don’t attempt it) but it does get the job done in a cost-effective manner. If your painting contractor is tackling light-colored walls with a similar color—for instance, making the switch from white to beige or pastel—it’s an ideal, time-saving choice.

The Drawbacks

Difficult to Use on Tough Tasks

Some paint jobs are tough, and an all-in-one-product simply can’t handle them. Auto detailing, for instance, requires extreme skill. Some clients will have detailed patterns and textures within their residence, which makes the job nearly impossible for any painting contractor. Think wisely before painting metal, exposed surfaces, and odd materials—these tough tasks still require a base for effective results.

Difficult With Different Colors

Since all-in-one products are effective for minor color changes, they pose a challenge for major ones. Attempting to use one product could create more work and higher costs, so if your client wants to switch from red to yellow or black to green, save yourself the pain and prime walls first! It’s better than risking an awkward color attempt or an unhappy customer. Drastic changes require that extra layer, so think wisely before trying out any product.
