A herniated disc is an uncomfortable condition that may result in back pain, numbness, or weakness in a limb. It occurs when the soft tissue between your vertebrae gets pushed out through a tear in the exterior tissue. It’s not always easy to tell when you’re suffering from a herniated disc, as its symptoms are often mistaken for a back sprain.

The following are some key warning signs to look out for:

  • Herniated DiscShooting Pain: If you’re suffering from a back sprain, the discomfort will usually be restricted to one central location in the back. With a herniated disc, you may experience more of shooting pain traveling down one of your legs. Other patients experience a shooting numbness. Either way, the pain is not limited to one area.
  • Pain When Bending Forward: An easy way to determine if your back pain is the result of a sprain or something more serious involves bending forward, then bending back to return to an upright position. If you merely have a sprain, the discomfort will usually occur only when you bend back. With a herniated disc, you may feel pain during both the forward and backward movements.
  • Stubbed Toes: Patients with slipped discs often lose strength in their legs. As a result, they stub their toes frequently on curbs, steps, and similar obstructions because their legs are too weak for the foot to clear the space in time. If you suspect you have a herniated disc, you can also try walking on your toes; doing so will be difficult, if not impossible.
