There are many techniques you can practice at home to revive your feet and relieve them of pain. Basic foot massage is a helpful skill to have in general—not just after a long day on your feet, but also if a loved one ever needs the relief. Aisen Chiryo Doin, a shiatsu massage clinic located in Honolulu, HI, has five tips to share on the matter.

5 Best Ways to Give a Great Foot Massage

1. Start With Your Pressure Points

There are about six main pressure points on your feet, which are located near the arch of your foot. Without over-thinking it, apply gentle pressure to these areas, giving the most attention to the points where it feels the most pleasant.

2. Don’t Strain Your Thumb

For most people, the thumb is the strongest finger—and as such, it often bears the brunt of most activities. Try to avoid straining your thumb, and let the rest of your hand take the lead when you can. Try to use your body weight to provide pressure by leaning in instead of relying on sheer hand strength.

3. Massage Your Toesfoot massage

If you wear tight or pointy shoes all day, you probably look forward to finally letting your feet breath. During your foot massage, gently pull your toes apart, and let each one stretch on all sides. You can also massage the spaces in between your toes.

4. Massage the Tops of Your Feet & Toes

You may end up giving a lot of attention to the bottoms of your feet, but don’t underestimate the impact of massaging the tops. Use your fingers or thumb by pressing to work your way from your ankle to your toes.

5. Move From Heel to Ball

Give the heel of your foot a good squeeze, while making circular motions with your thumb and fingers. Continue these motions while moving down to the ball of your foot.
