Shiatsu is a Japanese style of massage that has been practiced for centuries. The ancient art focuses on applying pressure to various points along the body to alleviate pain, relieve tension, reduce muscle cramps and spasms, and help the body to heal after injury. Aisen Chiryo Doin has been Honolulu, HI’s premier destination for shiatsu massage for nearly 40 years.

Sensei Fumihikio Indei, shiatsu masseuse and owner of Aisen Chiryo Doin, offers his tips for preparing for your massage:

  • massageDo Not Eat Or Drink Directly Beforehand: Because shiatsu focuses on pressure points throughout the body, having a full stomach before your treatment can be very uncomfortable and cause indigestion. You want to feel unrestricted and comfortable during your massage.
  • Wear Comfortable, Loose-Fitting Clothing: There are no oils used during shiatsu massage, so you will be fully clothed during the session. However, just as you should refrain from eating to remain at ease and unrestricted, you should also dress in loose, comfortable clothing during your massage. Many clients enjoy this, as it allows them to feel free and relaxed without the awkwardness of being naked.
  • Be Clean & Washed: Although you will be clothed for your session, your body will still be in very close proximity to the masseuse. As a courtesy, please be clean and washed on the day of your massage.
  • Be Vocal About Your Body: Your masseuse is a licensed therapist and can tailor your massage to fit your needs. If you are having pain in a particular area or have pre-existing medical conditions, discuss this with your therapist prior to your massage. This will allow them to create a session best suited to your needs.
