The Meatball Shop
1462 Second Avenue, between 76th and 77th Streets
Adding to the growing number of reasons to venture up to UES to indulge, is The Meatball Shop's highly anticipated opening of its fifth and largest outpost. Cult classic menu mainstays are the name of the game, but are joined by a stellar brunch lineup (new for the Meatball Shop team) and a full-blown beverage program featuring 40 ounce pitchers of seasonal cocktails such as the refreshingly tart Huckleberry Lemonade.
Michael Chernow and Daniel Holzman, the all-star duo behind these meatball meccas, first met and became friends on the Upper East Side, giving this sprawling, antique-laden space even more of a down-home, sentimental flare.
Seasonally rotating specials like a sensational corn and leek risotto, or the kale salad with anchovy soffrito aim to please, and do so mightily, with an unrivaled freshness that can only come from locally sourced ingredients. Clearly, while the meatballs aren’t going anywhere (especially with luscious veal and spicy buffalo chicken re-incarnations to devour), there’s a lot more to see (and taste) here.
