Summer is coming: The season of barbecues, beaches, and basking in the vacation days. But if you’re a pet owner, you’re going to be considering all your options for traveling with your pets this summer—rain or shine. Waipahu Waikele Pet Hospital knows it’s hard to leave your pet, so from the animal-loving staff, here are a few tips if you plan to travel with your beloved animal friends this summer:

Consider the comfort of your pet first: If the drive, ride, or flight will be too stressful for your pet, find other viable options for their care. Sometimes, the best tip for traveling with your pet is not to do it—for their safety and comfort.

Planes, trains, and boats: avoid them if you can: Driving with your pet can be stressful and tedious. Imagine how much more stressful and tedious flying, train-riding, or sailing might be—for you, for your pet, and for your companions. If you have to fly, make sure you can fly with your pet in the cabin. As for trains, most trains do not allow pets (except for service animals). Some cruise lines allow pets, so you’ll have to check with your cruise director or travel agent about the rules and regulations you must follow, especially if you’re sailing in foreign seas.

Use carriers and safety restraints: It doesn’t matter which type of pet you’re traveling with, animals are not used to being in moving vehicles. And in some cases, your pet might already find the ride a bit jarring, so use harnesses, carriers, and other safety restraints, and keep them in the backseat!

Plan frequent stops for feedings and bathroom breaks: If you’re driving, plan frequent stops to give your pet a chance to eat and for potty breaks. You’ll also want to give them a bit of exercise. Like small children, pets can get antsy when they are still for too long.

Never leave them alone in a car: This should be an unspoken rule, but never, ever leave your pet alone in a car. If you’re going to be doing activities where your pet can’t participate, it’s probably best not to take your pet along.

Your pet needs to feel safe, secure, and comfortable. If doing that means not traveling with your pet, then you should take that into consideration. Whether you need updated shot records for your pet, general checkups, or 24/7 pet boarding, Waipahu Waikele Pet Hospital is the desired pet-loving veterinarian hospital for you and your extended furry family members this summer.
