Whether you bought them for yourself as a mid-week pick-me-up or they were gifted to you on a special occasion, flowers bring a sense of brightness and rejuvenation to any room. Unfortunately, many people find that the blooms only last for a few days before the petals turn brown and the stems wilt. Luckily, there are a number of steps you can take to keep your flowers thriving for longer.

3 Easy Ways to Maintain Your Blooms

1. Trim at an Angle

The cause of many wilting flowers is a lack of nourishment and hydration. Bouquets require some basic pruning as they age to prolong their life span. When you change the water in the vase, cut about half an inch off the bottom of each stem, angling the scissors upwards to create a slant. This will open up more of the stem, so the flower can absorb as much water as it needs.

2. Clean the Vase

flowersNothing kills fresh flowers faster than a dirty vase. Before you add the bouquet to a vase, rinse out the glass and wipe it down with a dry paper towel to remove dust or dirt. Then, clean it every other day to ensure that debris and plant residue don’t clog up the water. Fresh water in a clean vase keeps the flowers from being poisoned and helps them thrive for at least a few more days.

3. Add Some Sugar

Plants need sugar to grow bright and strong. If you’ve noticed your bouquet looking a little down, give it some sweetness. Combine three tablespoons of sugar with two tablespoons of white vinegar for every liter of water before you add it to the vase. The sugar will encourage steady growth and the vinegar will kill any threatening bacteria, leaving you with a happy, gorgeous bouquet.
