Your smile says a lot about you, like showing others you’re friendly and trustworthy. If you avoid showing off your grin because of flaws like yellowed or gapped teeth, however, veneers will restore your confidence. They are a versatile cosmetic dentistry option that can address an array of dental issues. Several types are available, and understanding the differences will help you decide on the right veneer.

4 Veneers Types to Consider

1. Composite

More commonly known as dental bonding, this veneer uses composite resin to reshape the teeth and conceal gaps, chips, and stains. The treatment process takes a single dental appointment and is one of the most affordable options. There is also minimal, if any, enamel removal, so it’s ideal for patients who have suffered enamel erosion. Composite bonding typically only lasts a few years with proper dental care, and it’s not as resistant to stains or damage as other options.

2. Porcelain

Porcelain veneers are the most expensive option, but with the higher cost comes more durability. They look the most lifelike, are stain- and damage-resistant, and last up to 10 years or more with proper care. This option typically requires two appointments, though. During the first, your dentist removes a minuscule amount of enamel and takes impressions of your teeth. At the second appointment, they permanently affix your veneers to your teeth.

3. Instant

This pre-fabricated option means you get less customization than you would with composite bonding or porcelain veneers. Instant veneers typically require just one appointment, however, and they’re less expensive than porcelain. They’re also more stain-resistant than composite resin but won’t last much longer than a few years.

4. Removable

veneersSometimes referred to as snap-on veneers, a removable option has become available in recent years. It’s crafted from hard dental resin, and you can wear and remove it as needed. As with porcelain, your dentist will take impressions of your teeth and ensure your removable veneers look entirely natural. You can even eat and drink with the appliance in place. Despite being inexpensive, it’s not a good long-term solution for stained, chipped, or gapped teeth.

Which Option Is Right for You?

The best way to determine which option is right for you is to consult with your dentist. If you’re on a tight budget, instant veneers might be appropriate. If you have enamel erosion, the dentist may recommend composite bonding instead. Keep in mind that dental insurance plans typically do not cover cosmetic dentistry procedures, so you may have to cover the full cost.
