You are probably used to your dog having a wet nose, and seeing their nose look cracked or dry can be concerning. A dry nose doesn’t usually indicate serious illness, but it can be a sign that something is going on. Below are some helpful hints to know whether your pooch’s dry snout warrants a visit to your local veterinarian

A Veterinarian’s Guide to Your Dog’s Dry Nose

Why the Nose Is Dry

There can be a variety of factors causing your pet’s dry nose, and it doesn’t necessarily mean they are sick. A common culprit is simply dry weather or dehydration. Pay attention to when your dog’s nose appears drier, and make sure they are drinking enough water. It’s fairly common during the cold winter months, and your dog’s nose is also prone to sunburn in the summer.  It’s also possible your pet has allergies or environmental sensitivities, so take them in to the veterinarian to get them tested.

What to Watch For

If you know your dog drinks plenty of water, and the weather isn’t extreme, try changing a few things in their routine. Remove potential irritants such as plants, plastics, and toys, or perhaps your dog is allergic to a cleaner or detergent you are using. Sensitivity to plastic is quite common in dogs, so try swapping out their plastic water or food dishes for metal or ceramic ones. Pay close attention to when your dog’s nose gets better or worse.

When to Visit the Veterinarian

VeterinarianIf you’ve been watching your dog’s nose consistently and removed potential irritants, don’t hesitate to take your pup to the veterinarian.  If their nose appears crusty or flaky, and you notice any irritation on their skin, the nose issues could be signs of an underlying skin condition. Your vet will be able to determine if your dog is suffering from an illness or allergy, or if their nose simply needs some extra TLC. If needed, they can prescribe allergy medication, or they may suggest a balm or moisturizer for their snout. Your vet will be able to determine the cause and relieve your pup’s dry nose.
