Whether or not you’re currently consider selling it, ensure your watercraft holds onto its value. Achieving this goal is actually simple: All you need to do is understand what goes into boat service and maintenance and which tasks you need to complete on a regular basis. The following are three key ones that will preserve the item’s value.

3 Boat Service & Maintenance Tasks You Should Complete Regularly

1. Rust Inspections

Rust is a big enemy of every boat, since they are constantly exposed to water, which can cause corrosion. To avoid this, regularly take your craft out for a thorough inspection, and ensure no rust has penetrated the hull. If you see any, remove it right away. Additionally, wax the hull and cover the boat when you’re not using it to prevent the problem from occurring in the first place.

2. Oil Changes

Boat Service and MaintenanceJust like a car, every watercraft needs its oil changed on a set schedule. Ask your boat dealer exactly how often your model’s oil should be changed. As a general rule, it should be switched out after the boat has been used for 100 hours; that number should be closer to 50 during the peak season. Doing this regularly and on time keeps your craft safe from serious engine problems and maintains the integrity of its transmission.

3. Wash Your Boat

Keeping your craft clean is key to lengthening the life of its components, from the fiberglass hull to the upholstered seats. Always hose your boat down after a day on the water, and regularly wash it with a sponge, brush, and specialized wash that does not remove marine wax. This last part is important, because part of washing your boat is waxing it! A good coat will keep salt, minerals, and everything else your craft gets coated with from penetrating its finish.
