Even minor plumbing leaks can add up to a lot of money on your water bill. The problem is that it’s not always easy to detect minor leaks. You could even have a small leak in your piping underground that goes undetected. With these four tips below, you’ll find all plumbing leaks, big and small.

4 Tips for Finding Plumbing Leaks

1. Check Your Meter

Your water meter doesn’t lie. If you’re not using any water in your home, the meter should not be moving. Make sure that none of your appliances are running and nobody is washing hands or flushing the toilet. Then, check your meter; if it’s spinning, you have a leak somewhere.

2. Use Food Coloring

plumbingThe most common location for leaks is the toilet tank. To find out if your toilet is leaking water, even when you’re not flushing it, you can pour some food coloring into the tank. Wait about ten minutes and then inspect your toilet bowl. If the water is colored, you know that the tank is leaking water.

3. Check Outdoor Spigots

You would probably know if your indoor faucets were leaking, but outdoor spigots can waste water, too. When you connect your hose, there shouldn’t be any dripping water. If there is, you should tighten the connections and possibly replace the rubber hose gasket.

4. Monitor Your Bill

It’s a good idea to pay attention to your water usage each month. If your bill is unexpectedly high, that’s an indicator that water is being wasted somewhere. If your personal usage hasn’t changed, it’s worth investigating the situation to find the culprit.
