Winter can be fun with a dog who loves to play or take walks in the snow. But the cold, wet weather means their pet grooming needs are different during this time of year. Muddy paws, wet fur, and dry skin are all common winter issues that need special attention. Here’s how you can change up your pet’s grooming routine this year.

4 Winter Pet Grooming Tips

1. Use Paw Protection

Paws are particularly vulnerable to cracking during the winter. Snow, ice, and chemical deicers can be harmful to sensitive pads. Protect paws with dog booties or by wiping them off with a dry towel as soon as you return from a walk.

If you normally keep your pet shaved or partially shaved, consider letting the fur grow in during the cold months. You wouldn’t go outside without your winter coat, and your pet shouldn’t either! Their fur will provide much needed protection from the wind and cold.

3. Change Your Dog’s Bath Routine

Regular walks will probably leave your dog muddy and damp, making bath time even more important than usual. Be mindful that too much bathing can dry out a dog’s skin, so consider cutting back or switching to a moisturizing shampoo that will help their skin and coat stay hydrated. Ask the pet grooming expert at your veterinarian’s office to recommend a product.

4. Don’t Neglect Flea Control

You can’t know for sure when the frost will thaw and the mosquitoes will be back in force. Keep your pet on flea medication all year long to ensure protection, no matter when the warmer weather may hit. And don’t forget, fleas could still be in your home, on your pet’s bed, blankets or soft toys.
