Elderly loved ones are at risks for falls at home, but fortunately, there are some ways to help prevent them from happening in the first place. Whether your friend or family member is in a senior care home or assisted living facility or they’re living at their own house, it’s important to take precautions. Below are some examples of going about doing so.

Prevent Falls With These 5 Senior Care Tips

1. Install Grab Bars

2. Encourage Proper Footwear

Try to suggest that loved ones don’t wear socks or slippery shoes while in the house, especially on hardwood or linoleum floors, which can be extremely slick. A pair of slip-proof shoes that have a good grip on them is ideal.

3. Enhance Lighting

Whether someone gets up in the middle of the night or their house isn’t well lit, walking around in the dark can lead to tripping and falling. Make sure all lights have new, bright lightbulbs and install a few nightlights throughout the home.

4. Clear Up Hallways & Walkways

Often, people can trip on household items that are left on the floor. Clear hallways and walkways of furniture and belongings. Put items in baskets or move them up on shelves or into drawers.

5. Review Their Medical Conditions

Do a routine eye check and make sure your loved ones’ physical is up to date. Dizziness, poor eyesight, and low blood pressure can all contribute to someone losing their balance and falling. If they need medications or a new prescription to lessen a fall risk, have them schedule an appointment with their doctor.
