Weddings take a lot of advance planning, starting with researching and booking a venue for the ceremony and reception. Of course, the appearance and location of the venue are of supreme importance. However, there are several other factors to consider before you sign a contract. Here are five questions it’s important to ask your wedding venue before you book your event.

5 Important Questions to Ask a Wedding Venue

1. Will My Wedding Be the Only Event That Day?

If other events are scheduled in your venue the same day, it can limit the amount of time your guests can stay, as well as the amount of time you have to set up. It’s important to ask how many hours are included in the cost of your rental, how early you can arrive to set up, and how late your guests will be able to stay. You may also want to find out if an option exists to extend your event if your guests stay later than expected and how much it costs per hour to do so.

2. What Is Included in My Cost?

Ask your venue host for a list of exactly what is covered in your price. For example, check to be sure service charges, cleaning fees, and gratuity are included. Also ask how long you have to cancel with a full refund, and if you can make a change to your reservation without the addition of an extra fee.

3. Can We Use Our Own Vendors?

wedding venueSome venues have approved vendors that must be used when you rent the space, while others simply have a list of recommended vendors they can offer. If you do not have to use pre-approved vendors, ask for a list of guidelines outside vendors are required to meet.

4. Will the Space Be Big Enough for My Guest List?

While one of your first questions will likely be the wedding venue’s capacity, it is possible you will be able to fit more or less people depending on whether you require a dance floor or a band instead of a DJ. Sometimes rectangular tables can be substituted for round ones to maximize guest seating.

5. Can We Hire Our Own Caterer?

If the food and drinks are not provided by an in-house caterer as part of your venue price, ask if you can use your own caterer or if you have to use a caterer approved by the venue. Find out if your venue will allow you to purchase your liquor elsewhere or if it has to be purchased in-house. Be sure to also ask if there is a fee for the staff to serve the alcohol if you bring your own in.
