Children thrive on routine, and consistency and it is especially important when it comes to potty training. Children enrolled in child care need access to the same resources at home that they do at their learning center to be successful at potty training. Therefore, potty training is a partnership between parents and teachers. If you want your child to master using the bathroom but you’re not sure how to get started, Northwest Children’s Center in Cromwell, CT, is happy to help. Below, they share a few tips for facilitating a potty-training partnership with your child’s child care center.

How to Work With Your Child’s Teachers on Potty Training

1. Use Consistent Wording

Children may get confused if you call it “using the toilet” at home when the teachers at day care call it “going to the potty.” Once you start thinking about potty training, talk to your child’s teacher about your preferred terminology. A quality day care will be happy to implement your family’s phrasing for bathroom time so your child can enjoy a successful transition.

2. Consider Strategic Outfits

day careDon’t send your child to school in clothing that is hard to take off, such as overalls, leotards, or tights. Children who are new to potty training may not realize they have to use the restroom until the need becomes urgent, at which point they will need to undress immediately. If they can’t do so in time, they may become frustrated.

3. Encourage Children with Small Tangible Rewards

Some parents use a reward system to motivate their children to use the potty. Small rewards, like stickers, may be easy to give out both at home and at school.

4. Do Not Use Pull-Ups

The use of Pull-Ups gives the children a mixed message as Pull-Ups are still a form of diaper. Use traditional underwear during potty training and have many pairs readily available at home and at school.
