When you're facing an insulation or construction project, you'll often have to choose a type of spray foam insulation. The two most common types are open cell and closed cell polyurethane foams. Bel-Aire Home Improvement, an experienced roofing, siding, and insulation contractor in Platteville, WI, discusses each type in the sections below to help you choose which is best for you.

Closed Cell Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulationClosed cell foam is the most common type, largely because it is denser and offers a higher R-value, or better resistance to heat flow. Its R-value is commonly between 6 and 7.15 per inch of insulation. Also, because it is so popular, it is often easier to find a qualified contractor to do the installation.

Open Cell Spray Foam Insulation

Open cell spray foam insulation is less common than closed cell foam, in part because it was only available from a single company for the early part of its history. However, as others became aware of its benefits, other manufacturers started producing similar products. The primary benefit of open cell foam is its tendency to expand after installation. This allows it to reach tight or oddly-shaped areas that closed cell foam cannot and lowers the possibility of uninsulated sections. Unfortunately, because it is not as compact as closed cell foam, it only offers an R-value of 3.6 to 3.8 per inch. On the other hand, it is less expensive, which could provide exceptional savings in areas where temperatures are mild.
