When the kitchen sink begins to pool water or spit food scraps back up, you know you have a clogged drain on your hands. Before you reach for the phone, you may want to try a few simple at-home drain cleaning remedies. Here are a few DIY remedies that could solve your drain issues.

3 Top At-Home Drain Cleaning Ideas

1. Plunger

Plungers aren’t just for clogged toilets; they also work very well for bathroom and kitchen sinks. However, don’t reach for the same one you use for the toilet. Instead, use a smaller, hand-held variety designed for sinks. Make sure the sink is halfway full of hot water before you begin pumping. The pressure may force the blockage down the drain and solve your problem.

Another effective method involves utilizing hot water, baking soda, and vinegar. If you have water pooled in your sink, before you begin, use a large bowl to remove it. Next, fill the drain with one cup of baking soda. If necessary, force it at least partially down the drain with a large spoon or spatula.

Afterward, pour one cup of vinegar into the drain opening and insert the stopper on the sink. The vinegar and baking soda will combine to form carbonic acid and sodium acetate, chemicals that will help break down food and other clogged debris. After five minutes, pour four or five cups of boiling water down the drain to see if the material flushes through.

3. Plumbing Snake

If the clog exists further down the drainpipe, you may need to use a plumber’s snake instrument. You can insert the long, flexible steel tool several feet into the drain to free and pull up trapped material. If you don’t have one, you may be able to use a bent clothes hanger. However, if your home is older, be careful using this approach. Improper use could cause damage to the pipes.
