A lit dashboard warning light can be concerning, especially if it’s one you haven’t seen before. While all of the dashboard icons light up when they’re indicating your car needs some maintenance or auto repair, it’s important to know what each one means so you can resolve the issue. It may be something you can fix yourself, or you might need to take your car to a professional auto mechanic. Here’s your guide to what a few of these warning lights mean.

What Do My Dashboard Lights Indicate?

1. ABS Light

Shown as the letters “ABS” in a circle and two parentheses, this light indicates there’s something wrong with your vehicle’s anti-lock braking system. You can still stop, but the brakes may not be functioning at their highest capacity. The anti-lock braking system is responsible for preventing your tires from locking up when you press on the brakes, resulting in skidding.

Upon seeing this indicator light, prepare yourself for possible skidding upon braking, and drive slowly. Take your car to an auto repair specialist immediately to have it checked out and ensure your vehicle is safe.

2. Oil Pressure Light

Check your oil level and either top it off or take your car to a professional for an oil change. If the issue persists, there may be a leak.

3. Flashing Check Engine Light

The check engine light is the most common dashboard warning icon, and the issue is usually resolved by tightening the gas cap or getting a quick car inspection. When the engine light flashes, however, this indicates serious damage to the engine. In this case, pull over and turn your car off. Have it towed to the nearest auto repair shop. Continuing to drive your car when the engine light blinks may lead to a breakdown.
