Most people should see their optometrist once a year for an eye exam. But there are times when you need to book an appointment sooner. Changes in your vision and physical health may warrant more frequent trips to the eye doctor.

7 Signs You Need to Schedule an Eye Exam

1. Changes in Physical Health

If you were recently diagnosed with diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, or another disease that affects your eyesight, you need to notify the optometrist. Once they know about the condition, they’ll monitor your vision for any changes related to the disease.

2. Itching, Redness, Dryness

Red, itchy eyes come and go, especially if you have allergies. If your eyes are persistently irritated, though, you may be suffering from chronic dry eye. The optometrist will prescribe eye drops and give you ways to alleviate the symptoms and manage the condition.

3. Trouble Seeing at Night

Changes in night vision could mean having a harder time reading street signs. In other cases, you may notice halos or starbursts around lights, or have trouble distinguishing objects in the dark. If you find driving at night difficult, an eye doctor will help.

4. Spots, Floaters, or Blurred Vision

If you notice spots or floaters in your vision, these could be the result of a detached retina, which requires prompt treatment. If you've had a gradual blurring or clouding, it could be cataracts.

5. Squinting or Holding Books Farther Away

6. Light Sensitivity

Sensitivity to light accompanies a myriad of eye conditions, including infections and corneal abrasions. Light sensitivity may also result from illnesses like meningitis. Schedule an appointment to rule out any serious conditions or get appropriate treatment.

7. Not Knowing Your Last Eye Exam

If your last appointment was so long ago you don’t remember it, schedule another soon. In most cases, you need to see an optometrist once a year so they check any changes and detect possible diseases as early as possible.
