Whether you’re a truck driver renewing your CDL or looking to start a new career, the DOT physical will play an essential part in getting you on the road. This medical exam is mandated by the Department of Transportation to assess the overall health of drivers and ensure that they are medically fit to safely operate a large vehicle.  If you’re new to the process, PrimaryPlus’ LEAP-Occupational Medicine Team can help answer a few common questions patients have about DOT physicals.

5 DOT Physical FAQs

What Does a DOT Physical Entail?

A DOT Physical is somewhat similar to the general medical checkup your doctor may provide every year, except that it evaluates specific measurements that are set forth by the Department of Transportation. During your appointment, you can expect to have your vision, hearing, blood pressure, and urine examined. The medical examiner will also do a general review of your physical health to look for potential risks.

What Should I Bring to My Physical?

To help with the process, bring a full list of current medications and doctors. If you have a specific condition—such as diabetes or heart failure—that may preclude you from passing the DOT exam, bring relevant records and a physician note that states you are safe to work.

Will Drivers Be Screened for Drugs?

medical clinicMost employers require drivers to submit to a urinalysis to be screened for drugs that could impair on-the-road abilities. Typically, this test checks for the presence of substances such as marijuana, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines, and methamphetamines.

Is a Stress Test Required?

If you have a cardiovascular health condition or have suffered a related event—such as a heart attack—you may be required to perform a stress test during your DOT physical.

How Long Will Results Remain Valid?

In most cases, drivers are only required to renew their DOT physical every 24 months. However, if you have a particular medical condition that requires further monitoring, your examiner may shorten the time between physicals
