Buying a used car is an outstanding way to save money on a quality vehicle, but before signing anything, conduct a thorough inspection. While you’ll certainly check the exterior of the car for scratches and the interior for cleanliness, there are several items you won’t want to forget. Certain auto components wear down more quickly than others, and you should check them closely before making a purchase.

Tires

Give the tires a once-over to ensure they don’t need a replacement. You can check the tread depth by inserting a penny, head side up, in between the treads. If the top of Lincoln’s head is showing, the vehicle needs new tires. Other signs of wear and tear to look out for are cracks in the valves or sidewalls, which can cause slow leaks and increase the likelihood of blowouts.

Clutch

used-carIf you’re looking at a used car with a manual transmission, replacing the clutch could wind up costing almost the same as the car itself, so give it a careful inspection beforehand. You can look for warning signs while test driving it, such as slow response when shifting gears and dropping in and out of gear. Additionally, if the engine speed is slow to decrease when downshifting from higher gears, it’s likely on its last legs.

Brakes

Because brakes keep you and other drivers safe on the road, they’re one of the most important components to check before buying a used car. When taking the vehicle for a test drive, make a note of any grinding noises when applying pressure to the brake pedal. You can also visually inspect the brake pads; if they’re less than one-fourth of an inch thick, they need to be replaced.
