Aside from having the right rods, lines, and lures, there is another important aspect of fishing: proper etiquette. Though some fishing rules are area specific, there are also several universal rules that apply to anglers everywhere. Below, the Pickensville Marine & Sports Shop, Pickens County, AL’s go-to dealer for new and used boats, offers a brief guide for fishing etiquette.

Basic Fishing Etiquette According to New & Used Boats Dealer

Appropriate Licensingused boats

Before you step onto a boat or pier to fish, you must make sure you have an appropriate fishing license or permit. Young children do not require a license, but anyone over the age of 16 needs one. Unfortunately, there are no licenses or permits that work everywhere in the country. If you’re planning a fishing trip in another state, you must obtain a license ahead of time for that area.

Crowding on the Water

It would be very tempting to stick close to a fellow angler who’s hauling a lot of fish, but it is impolite to do so. It’s best to give an angler near you about a 200-yard berth to keep from overcrowding them. Also, be mindful that anglers are not the only people to use the water. Others may be swimming, boating, or enjoying the view. It’s important for everyone to give each other space.

Cleaning

While fishing, try to minimize your presence by not littering and preventing pollution to the water. Leaving the river bank, pond, or lake in better condition than when you first arrived is a great rule to follow. Always clean up after yourself!
