Some homeowners rejoice when warm weather comes to an end and the grass-cutting season is over, while others lament the onset of winter. Regardless of your mindset regarding lawn maintenance, it’s important to store your  equipment properly, so it can continue to serve you next spring.

Here are some tips to keep in mind as you prepare to stash your lawn mower for the season:

  • Clean the Mower: Remove the spark plug lead wire from the plug before performing any maintenance on your mower. If you use a walk-behind model, place it on its side and gently hose off the underside. Use a stick or similar tool—never your hands—to remove grass, dirt, and other matter from the blade.
  • lawn mowerRemove the Battery: After removing your mower’s battery, store it in a cool, dry place away from gas cans and your furnace or water heater. Disconnect the battery cable from the battery and wipe off the latter with a clean cloth. Use a metal brush or specialized product to clean the battery terminal.
  • Fill the Tank: Storing a mower with a full tank will prevent moisture from condensing in a partially empty one, leading to rust that could clog the carburetor. Add a fuel preserver to the tank according to the manufacturer’s directions. Run the mower for a few minutes to circulate the preserver. Then, turn the engine off and fill the gas tank completely. The fuel preserver should keep your fuel fresh for several months.
  • Store the Mower in a Dry Place: Your lawn mower should be stored in a dry place in your garage or shed. As with the battery, never store your mower near a water heater or furnace—or near any appliance with a pilot light.
