Winter is almost here, which means the plants and flowers that fill your garden will begin to change and go dormant. Now is the best time to prepare your yard for the upcoming season. As the leading source for garden supplies in Eagle River, AK, P & M Garden Services has over 38 years of experience providing helpful plant care tips and advice.

Below, the team behind area’s premier greenhouse offers a few ways you can prepare your plants for the winter:

  • Roses: The first step to protecting rose bushes is to remove all dead and diseased canes; this will keep the rest of the plant healthy. Once the first frost occurs, keep the flowers warm by packing mulch or compost at the bush’s base. Hybrid tea roses are highly susceptible to damage during the winter, so they may need a little more protection from the cold air. Use mesh to encase the plant and fill the enclosure with mulch, pine needles, or chopped leaves for insulation.
  • plants Eagle River, AKTrees & Shrubs: You can protect these plants from the harsh winter weather by either covering them with a cylinder packed with straw or transplanting them to another location on your property, such as a temporary greenhouse, during the fall. You should also water the trees and shrubs before the ground freezes, so the soil can continue to provide moisture and nutrients.
  • Perennials & Flowering Shrubs: Though perennials and flowers are meant to bloom year after year, they still need winter preparation to ensure their survival. Water them through the fall until the ground freezes. After the ground is frozen solid, cut the perennials and flowering shrubs down and cover their bases with a thick layer of straw or cut-up leaves. If you plan to install a new flower bed the following spring, cover the area with either mulch or heavy plastic to discourage unwanted weed growth once the ground thaws.

The above tips will help you begin winterizing the garden. If you need additional advice, you can count on P & M Garden Services to have everything your plants need to survive the season and thrive next year.
