A broken car window or windshield is a major inconvenience as well as a safety and security concern. It needs to be repaired as soon as possible by skilled, qualified auto glass experts. However, if you can’t get your vehicle to the shop for window repair immediately, there are a few important tasks to keep your car free of rain, snow, pests, or other debris, while also deterring would-be thieves.

Follow these three steps to protect your broken window until it can be fixed:

  • Remove Broken Glass: Put on a pair of protective gloves and remove as much of the shattered auto glass as you safely can. After gently removing the larger shards, use a shop vacuum to suction up smaller bits. Use the hose to vacuum as close to the window seal as possible to remove pieces of glass stuck inside.
  • auto glassClean the Seal & Frame: Wipe the window seal and frame with a damp, soft cloth to remove dirt and dust. Tape sticks better to a clean surface, so take the time to remove as much dirt from the area as you can.
  • Seal the Window: Clear packing tape works best to seal your broken window and keep moisture out. Always tape from the inside of your car instead of the outside, as packing tape can damage your car’s exterior paint and cause it to peel. Apply tape from the top of the window frame to the bottom, overlapping each piece as you apply a new one until the window is completely covered. While this technique cannot completely block a thief, it provides deterrence while protecting your car from the elements.
