At Riehl Sew N Vac, one of their favorite winter pastimes is cozying up by the radiator and working on a new craft. As Anchorage, AK’s leading sewing shop, that’s their pastime most of the year — but there is something to be said for sipping hot chocolate while making slippers, sweaters, quilts, and other soft crafts. It’s an idyllic way to spend all that extra time indoors, and an opportunity to make thoughtful holiday presents. If you’re interested in winter sewing and embroidery but need a little inspiration, the following ideas will help get you started.

Wintertime Sewing Projects

1. Scarves

An easy craft, scarves can be knitted, crocheted — and, of course, sewed. To sew the perfect scarf, pick up some quality fabric. Consider choosing two different patterns for a reversible scarf design.

2. Slippers

This simple craft is the perfect way to use up scrap fabric, as it doesn’t often require very much depending on the pattern. Slippers make welcome gifts that keep your loved one’s toes warm and snug through the cold winter.

3. Mittens

While often woven together, mittens can also be made by sewing fabrics together. For extra thoughtfulness, consider incorporating a waterproof material into your design; that way, the wearer can touch snowy and icy surfaces without getting soaked.

4. Cat Toys

sewingIs one of your loved ones a cat? Use scrap fabric to make poof balls, mice, or jump toys. Consider stuffing the toys with catnip for added fun. For safety’s sake, use thick thread and avoid strongly dyed fabrics for pet toys. And remember — the more your cat destroys it, the better the toy is!

5. Hot Drink Cozies

Homemade, reusable drink cozies are both useful and eco-friendly. Plus, you can easily make several of them in a short period. All you need are some scraps, elastic bands, maybe a few buttons, and a sewing pattern to follow.
