With a hectic schedule, it’s easy to let some things slide — as long as your oral hygiene isn’t one. In addition to keeping your smile sparkling white, there are other reasons to practice good dental habits. Try these easy-to-follow tips to stay on top of keeping your mouth fresh and healthy.

A Guide to Oral Hygiene Basics

Eat Well

When it comes to mouth-friendly foods, there’s something for everyone. Crunchy produce like apples and carrots act as a natural “brush.”  These snacks help your teeth by encouraging saliva production, which inhibits tartar-causing bacteria. Dairy products like yogurt, milk, and cheese also improve oral health — their calcium and Vitamin D promotes healthy bones.

Brush, Floss & Rinse Regularly

Oral-Hygiene-BethelOne of the simplest ways to keep your mouth healthy is to brush for at least two minutes twice a day. Additionally, you should floss and rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash at least once per day. Brushing and flossing remove tartar from on and in between your teeth, while the rinse reduces bacterial growth. Do you have trouble remembering to complete your oral hygiene every day? Set an alarm on your phone as a reminder.

Chew Gum

Like crunchy produce, chewing sugar-free gum can increase saliva, which rinses away chewed up food and bacteria. While it’s not a replacement for brushing, it’s a great alternative until you can get to the bathroom to clean your teeth. However, every dentist will tell you to avoid sugary gums.

Keep Dental Appointments

Don’t skip your twice-annual dental exam! Even if you’re fanatical about brushing and flossing, a dentist uses tools to give your mouth a deeper scrub than you can get at home. Your dentist will also look for signs of gum disease and oral cancers.

Scrub Your Tongue

Don't let your tongue become a bacteria breeding ground. While many people worry about their teeth, they often neglect to clean their tongues. When brushing, scrub the sides and top of your tongue and rinse with water. You can also use a plastic scraper to remove some of the film.
