Wisdom tooth extraction is a rite of passage for many young adults in America. Your wisdom teeth, also called third molars, will usually come in between the ages of 17 and 25. When they do, they can be disruptive to the rest of your bite, so the usual solution is to remove them as soon as possible. If your dental X-rays show it's time to start planning for wisdom tooth removal, you need to prepare ahead of time to make sure everything goes smoothly.

Your Guide to Preparing for a Wisdom Tooth Extraction

1. Understand What You're Getting

Talk to your dentist well in advance of your appointment. Clarify which teeth they will be removing, how long it will take, what to expect from the procedure, and what your recovery will be like. While you can look up general information on your own, your dentist will have tips specific to your situation.

2. Arrange a Ride Home

Your surgery will require anesthesia, which means you won't be able to drive yourself home afterward and may need someone to sit with you once you get home. Make sure to arrange with a parent, trusted friend, or significant other to take care of you after the surgery.

3. Ask About Food, Drink, & Medications

There's also a possibility of your usual medications interacting with the anesthesia. Make sure you clarify with your dentist whether you should eat or take your meds leading up to the day of surgery.

4. Schedule Time Off Work

The initial recovery period can make it difficult to concentrate on work or studies. Anesthesia may take up to 24 hours to wear off, and, after that, you'll experience some discomfort. Try to schedule two to three days off work and school.

5. Prepare Your Home

You're going to spend some time resting in bed, so make sure you're ready. Have soft food on hand that is easy to prepare. Fill your pain prescriptions the day before the procedure. Get a couple of ice packs ready as well, and have something to do so you won't get bored.
