Learning bow hunting with a traditional bow can infinitely improve your archery ability and skill level. While it may be a learning curve moving from a non-traditional bow to a traditional one, after practicing at Independence, KY’s M & M Archery Range and Pro Shop with the new equipment you will quickly discover that using traditional bows is much simpler.

A Beginner’s Guide to Bow Hunting With a Traditional Bow

Invest in Training to Learn How to Use a Traditional Bow

Non-traditional bows have a lot of extra mechanisms that make shooting easier, but for those who want to learn how to shoot the old-fashioned way, taking archery lessons is a great way to learn proper technique. Classes will start by teaching students basic form and safety guidelines so they learn how to use the gear and shoot safely.

Buy the Right Size Bow

Bow HuntingBefore beginning classes, it’s important to have the right size bow. Using a bow that is too heavy will lead to bad shooting habits.  The bow should fit your physical stature. For help finding the right size bow, visit the M & M Archery Range and Pro Shop.

Choose Carbon Arrows

Carbon arrows are great for traditional bow hunting because they help you get maximum penetration. For best results, choose heavy-for-spine carbons that weigh about 10 to 12 grains per inch.

Learn Proper Shooting Form

Archery training will help teach you the basics of form so that you can learn how to shoot accurately and consistently.  It is important to have a natural form that is easily repeatable, especially when learning how to shoot without sights. Unlike using compounds, traditional bow hunting requires form to be perfect and precise.

Learn Concentration Techniques

Using mental visualization and learning to shoot instinctively, will help better your aim and accuracy. Archery lessons will teach you how to turn your concentration on and off as well as how to use your whole body to shoot every time.

Whether you’re just beginning your archery training or looking to join archery leagues, starting with lessons at your nearby archery range is a great place to start.
