While a gravel driveway is a classic, low-maintenance addition to any property, it does require some extra attention to prevent unwanted erosion, particularly when it rains. Fortunately, you can stay a step ahead of erosion with some simple preventative maintenance tips. Prepare your driveway before the rainy season hits—you’ll be glad you did.

How to Protect Your Gravel Driveway

1. Drainage Ditch

Generally, your ditch should be roughly 12 inches below the surface of the road, and it should be installed on the sloped side of your driveway. Make sure you periodically clear debris—like mud, sticks, and leaves—so the water will easily flow onto the road.

2. Crusher Run

Ideally, your driveway should have a layer of gravel at least three to eight inches deep. Gravel suppliers can spread new crusher run for your driveway’s surface and road. Then, drive along the fresh crusher to finish off the job. For this process to last, spread crusher run now, before the heavy rains hit—otherwise, all that fresh gravel could be washed away if it isn’t compacted.

3. Drainage Pipe

This is a particularly great option if your home is located close to a creek or river. A drainage pipe can dump runoff into the body of water—but make sure the pipe is exclusively used for rain runoff, not everyday debris or chemicals.
