If you need new flooring for your home, choosing between traditional solid hardwood floors and modern engineered flooring varieties has its challenges. Although many people are quick to point out the pros and cons of each variety, the fact of the matter is that what works best for your home depends on your unique lifestyle and budget.

Solid Hardwood Flooring

Solid hardwood flooring is made from actual planks of hardwood trees. Each plank is around three-quarters of an inch thick, which means it can be sanded down and repeatedly refinished over the years. Solid hardwood is available in hundreds of different varieties, with oak, cherry, and maple as the most popular among home and business owners.

Unfortunately, since even the hardest woods are naturally porous, solid hardwood isn’t right for every area of your home. Areas that tend to accumulate water like bathrooms, kitchens, and basements, can develop damaged varnish or warping if they become wet. However, even given their vulnerabilities, solid hardwood floors are known for their durability, and with proper care, they can last a lifetime.

Engineered Hardwood Flooring

To mimic the look of solid hardwood, standard engineered floors have an uppermost wear layer made from natural wood. Although engineered hardwood floors are naturally resistant to problems like scratches, moisture damage, and chips, engineered flooring with a 4mm thick wear layer can be sanded down and refinished four to five times over the course of its 60 to 80-year life span.
