Waxing is one of the most popular hair removal methods because of its thoroughness and long-lasting results. It does have one potential risk, though: ingrown hairs. These are the product of hair growing back at the wrong angle and forcing their way back into the skin. You can avoid ingrown hairs by learning the proper technique—or, for best results, by turning to a skin care specialist. Below are some of the steps you can take to minimize the risk of ingrown hairs:

  • Exfoliate Beforehand: Skin care professionals recommend exfoliating your skin before waxing. Exfoliation will not only remove dead skin, but also release any hairs that might be liable to become ingrown. You can exfoliate with a variety of products and materials.

  • waxingLimit Waxing to Every 3 Weeks: Don’t wax your body hair any more often than every three weeks. If you get waxed too soon after a previous treatment, your hair won’t be long enough to adhere to the wax properly, and may end up ripping or breaking during removal—greatly increasing the chance of ingrown hairs. For a clean removal, let your hair reach at least a quarter of an inch before waxing.

  • Avoid Waxing the Same Spots: While waxing, try not to do the same areas more than once. Repeat waxing will irritate your skin, and can even force hair back into it, causing ingrown hairs. If you’re concerned about having “missed a spot,” you can always go back with tweezers, making certain to pull against the grain.

  • Moisturize Afterwards: After a waxing session, your legs will be inflamed and irritable. Rather than putting them straight back out into the world, give them a little TLC with moisturizer.

  • Wear Loose Fitting Clothing:  Tight jeans or leggings are a bad idea on the day of waxing. Tight clothing will chafe your skin and encourage ingrown hairs. Make sure to come to your waxing appointment in loose-fitting pants made from cotton or linen.
