Though you may not realize it, your mouth is home to billions of bacteria. Over time, these bacteria can turn into plaque, causing gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath. To ensure a healthy, radiant smile, McCall, ID dentist Brian W. Charles, DMD recommends the following daily oral hygiene practices.

5 Essential Daily Oral Hygiene Habits

Brush Your Teeth

A reminder never hurts: you must brush your teeth at least twice a day. When brushing your teeth, aim the bristles at a 45-degree angle near the gum line. Brush the exterior surface of your teeth and gums with a gentle up-and-down, back-and-forth motion. Apply the same motion to the interior surfaces. Lastly, brush the roof of your mouth and tongue to remove any lingering bacteria.

Floss Your Teeth

dentistDaily flossing can help remove leftover food particles and bacteria that your toothbrush may have missed. If your gums bleed when you floss, don’t worry; after a few days, the bleeding will subside, and your gums will be stronger for it.

Use Mouthwash

An antibacterial mouthwash can help eliminate plaque-forming bacteria, which in turn, can help prevent gingivitis, otherwise known as early gum disease. The fluoride in the mouthwash will also help prevent tooth decay and strengthen your teeth.

Watch What You Eat

Your dentist will tell you that your diet plays a major role in your oral health. Foods and beverages rich in phosphorus, sugar, carbs, and additives can have a negative impact on your teeth and gums. Make a point to consume foods and beverages that are high in calcium, Vitamin D, Vitamin B, and potassium to maintain your oral health.

While it’s far from a daily habit, it is important to schedule dental appointments at least twice every year. Your appointment will include a comprehensive examination, cleaning, and X-rays to help prevent and detect the presence of serious oral health issues.
