Although teeth whitening technology has advanced over the years, the practice has been around since at least the 12th century, when people used a mixture of sage and salt to clean and brighten their teeth. Brushes made from thorns or frayed sticks were also used for cleaning. In Egypt, wine vinegar was used, while wealthy Romans made a paste with goat’s milk.

Dentistry was left to barbers or barber-surgeons who could perform services like tooth extraction and early teeth whitening. They abraded teeth with a metal file and painted them with nitric acid so they would appear whiter. It was not until the 18th century that dentists began using a bleaching agent for teeth whitening. Unfortunately, the substance they chose, oxalic acid, was dangerous to consume or even to apply to the skin for more than a short amount of time. Oxalic acid is used today for cleaning wood, marble, and other tough substances.

In the 19th century, dentists discovered hydrogen peroxide was gentler and provided good teeth whitening results. The original use of hydrogen peroxide in dental care was to prevent infections and gum disease, but in 1989 a teeth whitening technique using it was patented, and dentists began offering the service in their offices.

When your dentist whitens your teeth, a tray customized for you is used to ensure little whitening solution comes into contact with your gums. When used in combination with an LED light, you’ll get great results.

In-home whitening is also available in the form of strips or a bleach that can be painted on, but the concentration of the whitening solution available at the drugstore is weaker than what your dentist can offer. Whichever one you choose, one thing is certain: Teeth whitening has come a long way over the years.
