Insulation plays a central role in keeping your home at a consistent temperature, and, when your home is properly insulated, heating and cooling costs are lower. Heat seeks cold and travels out in the winter and in in the summer.  All insulation carries a universal rating called an "R-value;” the “R” stands for resistance and measures how well the insulation resists heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating capability. For home insulation to work properly, your contractor must install the correct R-value that is required for the different areas of the home (ie. attic, walls, basements). It’s more efficient to use higher R-values in attics and rooms with cathedral ceilings than in wood framed walls, basements or crawls spaces with walls. The experts at All Season Insulation, serving the Greater Cincinnati, northern Kentucky, and Dayton areas, have the experience to help you determine the appropriate R-value of insulation for each area of your home.

Ohio’s R-Value Numbers

The R-value of home insulation will vary depending on the climate and location. The United States Department of Energy recommends R-values based on national climate zones:

  • Home InsulationAttic:  Homes in our area require a minimum of R-49.
  • Wall:  Uninsulated wood-frame 2x4 walls require a minimum of R-13.
  • Floor: This requires a minimum of R-19 in cold winter climates. Venting and moisture issues must also be considered.

Common Insulation Types

Once you know how much insulation you need for your home, you can look into the specific insulation types:

  • Fiberglass: Our preferred and most popular insulator with energy-saving qualities and low fire hazards. Also guaranteed that it won’t settle and lose it’s R-Value
  • Cellulose: Made from 85% recycled newspaper and 15% borate-based fire retardant, cellulose has tendency to settle and lose some R-value
  • Spray Foam: Vegetable-based spray that can be used to fill in foundation air leaks or large areas where other insulation methods are not an option
  • Radiant Barrier: Reflective foil-based product that is commonly used on vertical transitions walls found in Cape Cod style homes or bonus rooms, skylights and cathedral ceilings that are exposed in the attic
