There’s no debate about it: our precious cats don’t like to travel to their veterinarian appointments. The unfamiliar, loud, and jarring trip is loathed by felines of every shape and size. Waipahu Waikele Pet Hospital in Hawaii says there are ways you can make the experience better.

A quality crate furnished with engaging and comforting toys is often the best way to lower stress in your cat and make traveling to your pet doctor easier. Your family vets explain below what types of crates are ideal for your cat and how you can make them a comfort zone during vet trips.

The Right Crate for Your Cat

waipahu-veterinarianWhen choosing the perfect cat carrier, think about the size, its ease of transport, and overall sturdiness. The right crate is also one that is familiar to your furry friend. Many pet parents like hard containers that open from the top and side, so your veterinarian can remove the top and examine your cat if they’re fearful or sick. Get your cat used to spending time in the crate beforehand, and furnish it with items that make them comfortable.

Furnishing Your Cat’s Crate

Line the bottom of your cat’s crate with a soft blanket, clothing item, or towel. You can also place treats or toys inside of the carrier to encourage them to climb in and stay. While you’re en route to your appointment, some cats like to see what’s going on outside of their crate, while others prefer it covered with a sheet or blanket. You can also ask your vet about natural, anxiety-reducing sprays that you can apply to the crate before your cat enters. Finally, always remember to buckle your pet’s crate in with a seatbelt.
