A trip to the veterinarian to spay or neuter your pet is extremely important. Doing it at the wrong time could not only keep your pet from enjoying the medical benefits but even contribute to health issues down the road. Thankfully the experts in animal care at Waipahu Waikele Pet Hospital in Hawaii are here, offering their expertise on when you should bring your furry friend in for this critical procedure.

Waipahu Veterinarian Answers Spay or Neuter FAQ

Are Heat Cycles Important?

Female cats and dogs should be spayed before their first heat cycle. Waiting too long can drastically raise the likelihood of mammary cancer and other diseases, including potentially life-threatening infections.

What Is Too Young?

veterinarianFor dogs, the typical age to be spayed or neutered is somewhere between six and nine months. However, the ASPCA says that healthy pups can get the procedure as young as eight weeks of age, and waiting too long increases the risk of health problems. Cats can be spayed or neutered starting at about eight weeks, as well. Any earlier and their bodies haven’t matured enough to handle the procedure, but, as soon as your new pup or kitty hits that eight-week milestone, you should schedule a trip to the veterinarian.

What About Strays?

If you find a stray dog or cat and take it to a nearby veterinary hospital, it can be neutered or spayed right away as long as it doesn’t have any major health problems. Unfortunately, many strays have injuries, ticks, lice, mange, or other conditions. Get those treated first, and then your veterinarian can move to the neutering or spaying.
